Lanark and Carluke Choral Union Are presenting A Touch of Tartan in Greyfriars Church, Lanark, on Friday, November 28. Tickets are priced £7 and this includes refreshments.

Kirkton Church Was packed last Sunday afternoon for the annual charity day organised by Gill Murray and family and friends.

All proceeds will go to breast cancer Research.

St Andrew’s Church Guild Were delighted to welcome Sheena Boyle to their meeting last Thursday afternoon. Sheena gave a moving account of her work with the children of refugee camps in Palestine. Her address was very informative, highlighting the dangers the younger generation face in this troubled country.

Christian men The last breakfast morning, takes place on Saturday, December 6, in Kirkton Church Hall. A warm welcome will be given to all.

Carluke Opera Members will finish the year with their annual dance in Carluke Bowling Club on Friday, November 28. Several members will also be among the Christmas carol singers at Carluke market on Christmas Eve at 6pm.

Trefoil Guild Held a meeting in the Guide hall last Thursday. President, Agnes Ruthven welcomed the good turnout and introduced guest Marion Moffat, who gave an excellent demonstration of parcel wrapping. The final meeting of the guild will be held on Thursday, December 9, and will be a guest night with entertainment by the Jolly Beggars.

Bowling Club The ladies held a committee meeting last week where the proceeds of their Charity 2008 events were discussed. To date, the ladies have raised £2500 and have decided to donate the funds raised to a number of charities. The Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow will receive £1200, £600 will be donated to St Andrews Hospice, Lanarkshire Cancer Care transport services will benefit from £600, while £100 will be donated to WLBA Bowling. This year’s club president, Janice Brown, and her hard-working committee would like to thank the public and all members for their support shown during the Charity 2008 events.

Kilncadzow WRI Hope that many regulars and friends will make their way St Andrews Church this Friday evening (November 21) for the winter session of dominoes, 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought at the door. The last meeting for Kilncadzow WRI will be held on Thursday, December 4 at St John’s Church from 7.30pm. A last minute rush to fill the Christmas cake tins will be followed by a demonstration on tasty bites.

Christmas Comes alive in Carluke on Friday, November 28 with a fabulous festive show presented in the town centre from 4pm to 6pm.

Special guests at this year’s Christmas extravaganza will include Britain’s Got Talent’s Andrew Muir who will entertain before the switching on of the lights.

Carluke Bowling Club The eighth Gents Dinner was held on Friday evening in the clubhouse, where local caterer John McFarlane served a fantastic meal. Chairman was once again Alistair Mackie, who introduced the guests after a welcome to the company by William Smith. Guest speakers included Ian Semple, race horse trainer, lawyer Ricky Hutchinson and Sandy Strang, retired footballer. Ian McGregor gave speakers a sincere vote of thanks and all who had made the annual dinner memorable.

Braidwood Primary School Are this week holding an open night for parents who are considering sending their children to the school. Parents whose kids are set to start school in August 2009 can look around the school and get advice and information from members of staff between 6.30pm and 8pm on Thursday, November 20. There will be a creche facility for young children and refreshments will be available. For information, contact the school on 01555 770279.

Day Centre Winners last week were as follows: Whist - A Nelson, first place; H Rodger, second place; B Wright, third place. Dominos: N Yule, first place; J Pithie, second place. Centre members and friends will celebrate St Andrews Day with a function in Carluke Masonic Hall on Thursday, November 25.

Wishaw and District Brigade Band Still have tickets for their ceildih fund-raising dance next Saturday. Music at the event, which takes place on November 2, will provided by the John Leiper Ceilidh Band. Tickets can be booked by calling Moira on 01555 750 915.

Carluke’s Chapman’s Butchers Raised a fantastic £1272 for Breast Cancer Care week. The staff wore pink aprons and hats for the week and were delighted with the response from customers who gave so generously throughout the week.

Grange Nursing Home Matron, Moira Scott, retired after 17 years. She said a fond farewell to staff and patients on her retiral and everyone at Grange Nursing Home wished her all the best for the future.

Greggs the bakers Staff in Carluke extended a huge thank you to all customers who helped support their Children in Need fund-raiser. More than £50,000 was raised by Greggs staff and customers throughout Scotland last year and the response this year was equally as encouraging. The donations it look to be a record collection for the bakery.

Churches Christian Aid Committee Will start raising funds for Christian Aid 2009 by grocery packing in Somerfield this weekend. On Saturday, November 22, shoppers will get a hand with their bags in exchange for a donation towards the charity.

St John’s Church Are holding a special coffee morning on Saturday, December 6 between 10am and noon in aid of children’s charities.

St Andrew’s Church Guild Are celebrating Guild Week with a Songs of Praise led by WIshaw Parish Praise Group. There will be an opportunity to place a prayer at the ‘peace pole’. All welcome to the musical afternoon, which starts at 1.30pm tomorrow (Thursday, November 20) in the church hall.
