Wizard’s trophy simply magic!

SNOOKER fans in the local area were given the opportunity to look at Wishaw Wizard John Higgins’ World Championship trophy at the Dalziel Centre’s first ever summer fete – while the day hospice potted a terrific £2025 as a result of the event.

In addition to a car boot sale, home baking, plant sale, jewellery and many more stalls, the World Snooker Championship trophy – won recently by the Wizard of Wishaw John Higgins – was the star attraction for the many people turning up for the day.

Higgins, patron of NHS Lanarkshire’s Dalziel Centre, was unable to attend due to other commitments but his dad and manager, also John, opened the fete and brought the magnificent silverware with him.

Carol Murphy, team leader of the centre, said: “This is the first summer fete we have held and we were delighted with the success.

“We hope to continue the event each year to raise money for counselling therapy for patients and carers which can make a big difference to the people who need the services of the Dalziel Centre.

“The turnout was fantastic on the day, the weather was great and we’re delighted with how much money we raised.

“I’d like to thank all the staff who gave up their time to organise and run the fete and for everyone who came out to support us on the day.

“A special thanks also to John Higgins senior who opened the fete and to his son for allowing the snooker World Championship trophy to be brought along and shown to the crowds.”

The Dalziel Centre is a day hospice, based at Strathclyde Hospital in Motherwell.

The centre caters for patients, carers and families in Lanarkshire who are affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Patients can be referred to the centre by GPs, district nurses, Macmillan nurses, hospital staff, social workers and St Andrew’s Hospice in Airdrie.

Anyone from the Motherwell and Wishaw areas can also drop in any day from 9am to 5pm. Alternatively people can call the helpline on (01698) 245076.
