Gas warning

SHOTTS MP John Reid has warned people in his constituency to be alarmed about the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.

He said: “It is estimated that around 20 million people in Britain, including many here in Lanarkshire, are putting themselves at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by not taking the necessary precautions.

“It is a highly poisonous gas that has no colour, no taste and no smell. It can be produced by any appliance burning gas, wood, oil or coal.”

He praised the efforts of North Lanarkshire Council and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Services in trying to ensure that homes and properties have appropriate alarms installed. However, he is urging the public to do their part as well.

The MP added: “Make sure you have an audible alarm fitted, either via the council or your landlord. They can also be purchased at local DIY stores for a few pounds. Take steps to ensure the alarm system is serviced on a regular basis and do not remove batteries for other purposes.”
