James Rocks on – by leaving body to medical science

WELL-KNOWN Coltness man James Rocks spent decades in Alcoholics Anonymous helping other people – and after passing away last month his body will now be donated to science.

A highly-respected member of the organisation for over 40 years, he helped hundreds of people at AA meetings in Wishaw and beyond.

He passed away on May 11, aged 81, in Wishaw General Hospital but he had already decided some years ago that he wanted to donate his body to the anatomy department of Glasgow University.

And now his family have planted a tree in Cambusnethan Cemetery to celebrate the life of a remarkable man who always put the welfare of others first.

His granddaughter Nichola Davies (31) told the Wishaw Press: “He was a forward-thinking man and his decision to donate his body to medical science was typical of a selfless man who was so thoughtful towards others.”

A World War II veteran, James was a senior member of AA for over 40 years before his death. Over the decades hundreds of people were helped by him and he will be remembered as a kind, wise and inspirational man. At AA meetings around the country, a minute’s silence has been held in remembrance.

Before ill health prevented him, James liked to keep fit and was a daily visitor to Wishaw swimming baths for many years where he was very well known as quite a character with a great sense of humour.

The old section of Cambusnethan Cemetery now has a tree and plaque to honour the life of a remarkable man. He was much loved by family and friends and is greatly missed by all.
