Cancer patient raising cash to thank medics

WISHAW man Iain Thewliss has been given a second chance at life after fighting back from lung cancer – and now he’s trying to raise cash for the people that helped him through it.

The big-hearted 59-year-old has roped in three of his pals to help him do a charity walk around Strathclyde Park on Saturday, July 18, and they already have £500 in the bank.

The money they raise will be split between a number of charities including the West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre and the Wishaw-based Lanarkshire Cancer Care Volunteer Drivers.

Iain said: “I’ve finished my treatment and it’s looking good for me. I won’t know for sure for four or five weeks yet but the doctors are very confident and it looks like I have been given a second chance of life.

“The least I can do is help put the people that helped me, and I’m going to do it even if I have to finish the walk on my hands and knees.”

The charity walk is being called the “Give A Pound Day” by Iain and that’s all he is asking people to donate. He’ll be starting the walk at 9am with friends Tom Ferrier of Wishaw, John Boyd of Newmains and Mark Goldie of Airdrie.

There will also be a charity night in Wishaw Orange Hall on Saturday, September 12. To secure tickets or to help sponsor the charity walk call Iain on (01698) 340003.
