Tribute to expat Mary McSevich

A WELL known Cleland woman who emigrated with her family to Australia in the late sixties has passed away.

In 1967 Mary McSevich, along with her husband Dr Joseph McSevich – who practiced in Cleland for 20 years – decided to leave Scotland and emigrate to Perth, Western Australia.

Along with their 10 children, aged between five and 20, the family left on July 17 1967. They eventually settled in the Perth suburb of East Fermantle and lived what members of their family described as an “idyllic life”.

The family grew up over the years and some of the children, now adults, occasionally travel back to Cleland with their families, August 2006 being their latest trip.

Six years ago Mary had a stroke that left her paralysed on the left side. Joseph then retired from his work to look after his ailing wife. His medical background proved extremely helpful during this time. Mary's health continued to deteriorate and required almost full time care.

Unfortunately, in November 2007, Joseph was diagnosed with cancer and Mary, then 87-years-old, went into a care home while her husband fought the disease.

Joseph won his battle but was left too weak to look after his wife so she remained in the home. He was devoted to Mary and visited her twice daily to help look after her.

On Sunday June 7 Mary had a second stroke and became gravely ill. She rallied but unfortunately passed away peacefully on Thursday June 11 2009.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, aged 90, her 10 children, 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A member of the family said: “Those Cleland residents that knew Mrs McSevich will no doubt remember her as a devoted wife, loving mother and loyal friend.”
