Free bus service to Ravenscraig
A NEW free bus service to the £32 million Ravenscraig sports centre should help people get in shape.
That’s the view according to Strathclyde Passenger Transport, who have teamed up with community transport group Shotts Getting Better Together to lay on the bus service to the state-of-the-art sports facility for the next six months.
Providing the service for the period will cost £35,000.
However, it is hoped that this investment will pay off by helping people use the superb facility and, as a result, improve their health.
Kaye Harmon is a councillor for Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, and a SPT member for North Lanarkshire.
She said that she fully supports the introduction of the service and added: “SPT is delighted to encourage initiatives such as this and we see the support we are offering in terms of finance and use of a vehicle as exactly what SPT is all about.
“Hopefully this pilot project will help to kick-start wider bus services to both Ravenscraig Sports Centre and the adjacent Motherwell College campus, in the interests of all of the North Lanarkshire residents.
“Going forward, SPT will continue to work with the bus industry to try to secure longer-term bus services in the area.”
If the new service is successful, commercial bus operators could introduce separate services to the sports centre and also Motherwell College.
June Vallance, manager of Shotts Getting Better Together, said: “Our aim is to get local people to live a healthier lifestyle and encouraging use of new facilities in the area.
“Linking up with SPT to encourage the community to take advantage of the new state-of-the-art sports centre at Ravenscraig is a perfect partnership.”
Operating Monday to Saturday at various times throughout the day SPT will provide the community with a committed bus service which will serve Cleland, Coltness, Forgewood, Holytown, Newarthill, North Lodge and North Motherwell.
Jim Logue, Chairman of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “The new Ravenscraig facility has proven to be an incredible success with over 500,000 visitors in the first few months alone. This new bus service will encourage even more people to come along and benefit from the first class facilities available.”
For the six-month pilot project, SPT will use a low-floor minibus that will feature a special livery to promote the service and the sports centre.
