THE youngsters from Castlehill Primary School and Nursery in Gowkthrapple certainly know how to use their loaves when it comes to saving the planet.

They took part in the One Planet Picnic event, which was organised by Eco Schools Scotland, to help pupils learn about being green.

Head teacher Tina Milligan said: “The aim of the Eco Schools picnic was to celebrate and enjoy Scottish foods while thinking about eco-friendly packaging and food waste.

“To ensure these aims were met, the school’s Eco Committee asked all the classes to think about foods from Scotland that they enjoyed and would be willing to eat, hopefully cutting down on leftovers!

“The Eco Committee ordered fruit from a local company who delivered it in one cardboard box. They bought the other items from shops in Wishaw. Food was transported to the school in reusable shopping bags from Mrs Brownlie, of the Eco Committee. And the nursery used the cardboard boxes for junk modelling.”
