Ravenscraig Sports Facility
OVER 500,000 people have visited the Ravenscraig sports centre since it opened its doors a year ago.
Every week sees 1000 youngsters pull on their shooting boots to play football there while the Dynamic Gymnastics Academy has grown from 45 members to 500.
It has also been used by rugby teams, including the Glasgow Warriors and Scotland under-19 teams. This month saw the introduction of tea dances, which are proving popular with senior citizens.
John Swanson, centre manager, said: “The popularity of Ravenscraig has far exceeded all our expectations. There’s a real buzz about the place, particularly in the evenings where there’s so much going on.
“In just 12 months we’ve held televised snooker and boxing events, and national badminton tournaments. It was also a venue for the International Children’s Games.”
Operated by North Lanarkshire Leisure on behalf of the council, it boasts a full-size indoor and a full-size outdoor 3G football pitch and six floodlit outdoor five-a-side pitches. Athletics forms a major part of the complex with a six-lane, 135m running track, throw and jump areas and a strength and conditioning area for athletes.
There’s also a multi sports hall with nine badminton courts, a huge fitness gym with top of the range Technogym equipment, dance studios and a sports injuries clinic.
