Laura Walker of Harthill

Stunning architecture student Laura Walker has designs on a catwalk career after entering a top modelling competition.

The 20-year-old from Harthill is competing in the finals of Miss Galaxy but needs help from the community after winning the North Lanarkshire heats.

She will now compete against beauties from across the country for the Scottish title but has to raise £300 ahead of the showdown next March.

Laura had to email in her application and said: “A few hundred girls sent their picture to the jury, and about 20 out of these were chosen. I’m very surprised, I didn’t even think I had a chance of being in the final.”

All the finalists have to raise £300 to cover the expenses of participating. After that they all do charity work and Laura is clear about who she wants to help.

She added: “I would like to docharity work for St Andrew’s Hospice, as it’s close to where I’m from.

“I know it’s a great place, and needs so much money to keep it going.”

The Miss Galaxy Scotland final will be held at a luxurious hotel in Lancashire next March on the same weekend that the English and Welsh finalists strut their stuff.

The winner will represent Scotland in the Miss Galaxy pageant in USA, as well as doing charity work throughout the year.

Laura thinks she will find the time to keep up with both her studies and the modelling if she becomes the lucky winner.

She explains: “I don’t think I will have to put my studies on hold.

“If you do things for charity, which is a big part of the job, you’ll always find time for it.”

She is studying architecture at the University of Strathclyde but after doing some modelling is hoping that takes off as a career.
