Hotly-tipped Wishaw rockers the Vigo Thieves are set to launch their new single.
And the band have continued the trend of using celebrities in their music videos – by getting John Leslie to appear in the promo for the excellent track called Ghosts.
The former Blue Peter presenter – whose TV career ground to a halt a decade ago amid a string of lurid headlines – followed in the footsteps of Shameless actor Jody Latham, who starred in the band’s previous release.
The promotional clip for Ghosts – which is released next week – was filmed earlier this month in a Glasgow pub and depicts the game-for-a-laugh celebrity singing along to the track in a karaoke style.
Vigo Thieves vocalist Stevie Jukes explained the band’s decision behind approaching Leslie, now a successful property developer in Edinburgh, to take part.
He said: “I saw John being interviewed on breakfast television recently.
“He spoke in detail about the extremely difficult time he went through a few years ago and also said he was looking to get back in the public eye, so I just thought he’d be ideal for our new video as he wasn’t someone you’d immediately associate with belting out a karaoke number.”
Stevie continued: “We got in touch with John through the weekly show he does on a community radio station. Fortunately, he loved the idea and was up for taking part as soon as we pitched it.”
Filming for the video took place on a Sunday morning in Glasgow’s State Bar and ended up typifying the Vigo Thieves’ spontaneity.
Stevie went on: “We’re a bit last-minute to be honest, it’ll be alright on the night sort of thing. But as usual, everything fell into place. Which was just as well since John was off to Thailand on holiday the next day!
“I have to say he was an absolute gentleman and a lot of fun to work with. He has a great sense of humour and hung around for a pint and a chat after filming which was good. He wasn’t familiar with our music beforehand but loved the song and I’d like to think he’s a fan now.”
The band, which also comprises Stevie’s brother Al on drums, bassist Gordon Phipps and Barry Cowan on lead guitar, hope to make 2013 particularly memorable.
They’re keen to build on last year’s many successes – which include delivering a barnstorming set on their T in the Park debut, where their song Heartbeats was also chosen as the festival’s official song – and have already made a great start.
Stevie enthused: “As well as the imminent release of Ghosts, which we’re really happy with, we’re gearing up to play consecutive nights at King Tut’s next weekend.
“The Saturday night gig (February 9) is already sold out and there’s not many tickets remaining for the Friday show, so we’re delighted with the response to that.
“A sell-out there would represent the first time an unsigned band had sold out consecutive nights at the famous venue, so it’ll be a real achievement for us.”
Ghosts will be released this coming Monday, February 4, on Little Big Shot Records.
