New project to extend hospital car park drives full steam ahead

VISITORS to Wishaw General Hospital are set to benefit from an extra 350 car parking spaces which are set to be built.

NHS Lanarkshire this week announced that the capacity of the car park will soon rise from 1018 to 1368 – an increase of 32 per cent.

Work can now begin on the new spaces after North Lanarkshire Council gave the green light to the health board at a planning meeting on Thursday, October 9.

It is now hoped work will get under way later this month, with the project due to be completed by early next year.

The staff car park to the rear of the hospital is being extended, as are two areas at the sides of the building.

Extra spaces in the staff car park will free up many places in the main car park at the front of the hospital.

Health board chiefs say disruption will be kept to a minimum. Bob Brown, NHS Lanarkshire’s head of PFI Contracts, said: “We have recognised for some time the need to increase the number of car parking spaces at Wishaw General Hospital.

“We’re delighted the work will now soon get underway and that everyone associated with the hospital – staff, patients and visitors – will notice a significant improvement once it is complete.”
