YOUNG Eilidh Birrell, from Lammermoor Primary School nursery class in Wishaw was all smiles when she received a gift and certificate after winning the latest Children’s Traffic Club competition.
North Lanarkshire Road Safety section launched a monthly competition to promote and reward loyal young members for following the road safety rules.
CTC was introduced in 1995 to help reduce the large number of children injured on Scotland’s roads every year. It has been developed to help parents teach their young children to stay safe when they are out walking, playing or travelling and recent statistics show it’s having a positive effect.
Since its launch, research has found that 81 per cent of members use pedestrian crossings compared to just 50 per cent of non-members, while crash statistics show a 12 per cent reduction in child casualties for members.
Membership of the CTC is funded by the Scottish Government and is free to all three-year olds. Additional resources are available for professional groups.
