ATHLETES from Lanarkshire returned from the recent International Children’s Games in San Francisco with their best ever medal tally.
As reported in last week’s Wishaw Press, middle distance runner Craig Wellcoat from Motherwell won a gold and bronze medal in the boys’ 1500 metre and 800 metre races respectively.
Team Lanarkshire as a whole brought home three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Declan Kelly of Taylor High School and Fraser Kerr of Calderglen High School were part of the successful boys’ football team who won bronze medals at the Games.
They defeated a team from Tralee in Ireland in the tournamen’ts third-place play-off match.
Coltness girl Laura Livesey was just outside the medals, finishing fourth in the girls’ 100 metre final.
But the young sprinter was delighted with her achievements after running a personal best time of 12.64 seconds.
Councillor Gerry Convery said: "All of our 15 competitors were wonderful ambassadors for Lanarkshire and for Scotland and their spirits were high, having just learned that the Mini Olympics, as the Games are affectionately called, are to be held in Lanarkshire in 2011.”
He added: "Their achievements were outstanding in all of their disciplines and they are a credit to themselves and to Lanarkshire.”
