Kids on track for athletics success

THE finals of the North Lanarkshire Secondary School Track and Field Championships at Wishaw Sports Centre take place today (June 10).

Over the past fortnight, kids from secondary schools in the area have been taking part in trials and qualifying events for the championships.

Yvonne Murray senior athletic development and events officer for North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: “The kids are doing exceptionally well and there has been a really great turn-out from the secondary schools in North Lanarkshire.

“We have had some qualified athletics coaches helping out. They are assisting in helping build bridges between the schools and the athletics clubs which is so crucial.

“For the kids, there is a pathway in place if they want to continue in athletics.”

Later this month, Murray will take charge of the Lanarkshire athletics team who will represent the county at the 2009 International Children’s Games in Athens (June 24-28).

In 2011, the Games will be held in Lanarkshire.

l The North Lanarkshire Secondary School Track and Field Championship finals begin today at 10am and finish around 2.30pm.
