Moira wins her eighth champ of champs title

MOIRA SHERIDAN of Law Bowling Club made it four in a row by winning the 2009 Clydesdale Ladies Champion of Champions Bowls title.

The event was held at her home green over two days - Tuesday, June 2, and then finals day on Tuesday, June 9.

Moira has now won the prestigious title eight times, her first success coming 18 years ago.

She defeated Margaret McSkimming (Blackwood Victoria) in this year’s final.

In the semi-finals, Moira defeated the Lanark BC champion Marian Coats in a fantastic game which finished 21-20.

The second semi-final saw Margaret McSkimming claim the scalp of Margaret Neilands from Tarbrax BC in another close game, which finished 21-17.

Millar Stoddart, Community Recreation Manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure, gave a brief history of the event at the end of finals day.

It has now been played annually for 26 years and continues to play a prominent and prestigious role in the ladies bowling calendar.

Thanks were given at the awards presentation by Liaison Officer Colin McKendrick to Law Bowling Club for hosting the 2009 event as he praised the markers, scorers and the excellent catering and hospitality facilities supplied over the two days.

He added: “I would like to thank all the players who competed in the 2009 event, Jean Smith and Johan Steele from the Sports Council Ladies Bowls Committee for their excellent administration and Frances Thompson from the Ladies Bowls Committee for being the umpire over the two days.”

The project was organised by Clydesdale Sports Council in partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure.
