Motherwell girls maintain proud record after 4-4 draw

MOTHERWELL Girls under-17 football team and their Dunfermline counterparts served up a top-of-the-table cracker last Sunday.

The sides shared eight goals, with Motherwell maintaining their unbeaten record this season.

The county side took the lead after just five minutes when Rachel Everett played the ball down the right wing to Scotland star Emily Thomson, who cut past a Dunfermline defender and laid the ball back to fellow internationalist Lucy Clark. She made no mistake with a shot that beat the goalkeeper to her right and ended up nestling in the corner of the net.

The Pars hit back shortly afterwards when the Motherwell defence failed to deal with a corner from the left, allowing a free header for the striker.

Dunfermline then took the lead with a long-range effort which went over the head of the Motherwell goalkeeper.

But just before the interval Emily Thomson equalised for Motherwell after some neat build-up play.

In the second half, it was Dunfermline who started the stronger, taking a two-goal lead with shots from outside the box.

Despite the Lanarkshire girls playing some attractive football, they passed up a couple of chances to get back in the game.

Rachel Everett hit the bar with a free-kick and the rebound was headed over the bar by Jasmine Wilson.

However, Motherwell would not give up and with 15 minutes to go Rachel Everett got on the scoresheet, drilling a shot into the net from what seemed like an impossible angle.

Two minutes later, the sides were level at 4-4 after Emily Thomson burst into the box and was upended by two defenders.

Up stepped Everett again and she scored from the penalty spot to conclude the goalfeast.

Meanwhile, Motherwell Girls under-13s have been joined at the top of their league by Falkirk Whites after the Falkirk side won 3-2, despite being two goals behind at half -time.

Falkirk Ladies defeated Motherwell’s Academy team 9-5 as illness and injuries took their toll on the county side.
