Wishaw Juniors

Wishaw Juniors salvage point ar Rossvale

WISHAW travelled to Glasgow on Saturday, seeking to build on their midweek 2-1 home victory over Cambuslang Rangers, and came away with a point after a battling performance against Rossvale. The game started badly for Wishaw when they found themselves a goal behind after a fine sweeping move which ended with Vale’s McDermott driving the ball past Ross Harkness.John Cuddihy then had an opportunity to level after Chris Faulds was brought down in the box but keeper Sommerville chose correctly, diving to his right to save the penalty.Things got worse for Wishaw when they found themselves two down on 24 minutes.A free-kick was lofted into the box from the right touchline and headed home by Vale’s Danks.Wishaw improved in the second half and pulled one back through substitute Robert Boyle, who reacted quickest to the home side’s failure to clear their lines, driving the ball home through a ruck of players on 62 minutes. The visitors continued to press and despite having to play in near-monsoon conditions finally levelled the scores with eight minutes of the game left after Faulds was pulled down in the box. This time the striker elected to take the kick himself and made no mistake, blasting the ball home as the keeper went the wrong way.The Beltane lads then went in search of a winner but play was patchy and as the rain continued to pour down both sides were relieved to hear the final whistle.Wishaw boss John McKeown was satisfied to claim a point with seven of his squad unavailable due to work and holiday commitments. It came on the back of a fine 2-1 win against Cambuslang last Wednesday where Chris Faulds netted a stunning winner from more than 50 yards out.“I had to make  four changes from Wednesday which you don’t really want to do after a good win,” McKeown said.“We started poorly and made a couple of defensive errors which saw us 2-0 down .“I had a go at them at half-time and I always felt we had the ability to get back into the game.“I was happy because we got back into it but with a full squad I think we could have claimed all three points.“But with how it was and being away from home you have to be satisfied with a point.“We have not really settled as a unit and I hope in the next couple of weeks that can happen.”McKeown also confirmed the signing of former Thorniewood stopper Neil Newman. He added: “He has got a wee bit of experience, which I felt we were lacking. Neil is strong in the air and is a good talker. Hopefully he will be an asset going forward.”This week Wishaw are at home to one of the oldest clubs in Scottish football, playing host to Vale of Leven from Alexandria (2pm, Beltane Park).Read
