Ciaran is Wishaw Golf Club Champion

Ciaran Farrell

NEW Wishaw Golf Club Junior Champion Ciaran Farrell hopes to be playing off scratch by his 18th birthday.

The 16-year-old gave up football last year to focus his attention on golf and was rewarded with victories in both the Boys’ Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships at Wishaw this season.

He also represented his County this year at under-15 level.

Proud father Gerry said: “He got his handicap down from nine to four this season and is now beginning to hit the ball as far as the adults.

“But his strength is his short game and he practises a lot up at the club.

“Ciaran’s trying to get down to scratch before he is 18.”

The Taylor High School pupil secured six 1s and two 2s in his Standard Grades this summer and despite having aspirations to become a chartered accountant, he would love to make it as a pro golfer.

Gerry added: “He has mentioned a scholarship in America but we will see how things play out over the next few years. He’s pretty level-headed.”
