THE Clyde Valley Falcons hosted their annual American Football tournament last weekend at Beltane Park - and saw their 23-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
The Wishaw youth side were joined by the Tigers, Wildcats and Wolves to contest the Clyde Valley Bowl.
The youngsters had already won the first tournament this year and went into this competition as favourites.
But it was the Glasgow Tigers who emerged victorious in dramatic circumstances as the Falcons rued the loss of running back Callum Woods through injury.
In their first match, the Falcons took on the Wildcats but got off to a terrible start, going 6-0 behind.
But this seemed to wake the Falcons up and from then on they never looked back, winning 45-6.
The Tigers were up next and theys also clawed their way to an early 6-0 advantage.
At this point, the coaches had a word with the Falcons and they came to life again, scoring 21 points without reply.
However, the Tigers staged a remarkable comeback, scoring 20 unanswered points themselves to secure a 26-21 victory, ending the Falcons’ superb run of form.
They went ahead with 30 seconds left on the game clock. With the Falcons pressing for the winning score, the Tigers picked off QB Farrell in the end zone.
The Tigers were worthy winners on the day.
The next opponents for the Falcons were the Wolves but they were shown no mercy from the home side, who won 37-18.
This meant the Tigers had to beat the Wildcats to win the tournament.
It turned out to be a great game and even closer than their battle with their hosts.
With time running out again, the Tigers scored to take the lead 32-30 and win the tournament.
Falcons coach Gillespie congratulated the Tigers on winning. Fellow coach Farrell would like to thank all of the people who assisted in the running of the tournament.
