Martial Arts: Wishaw fighters do well at the British Tukido Championships

MEMBERS of Wishaw Tukido Club were in outstanding form at the British Championships which were held in Paisley recently.

The venue for the event was the Paisley Lagoon Centre and red belt student Kevin Mason and green belt Fraser Ross showed great commitment and skill to scoop a number of medals on an action-packed day.

In his first championship, green belt Fraser put on an exceptional performance throughout the competition.

The green belt free sparring final was a highly-charged and particularly exciting bout to watch and Fraser was outstanding but unfortunately he was narrowly beaten for gold by a member of his instructor William Waters’ other club, Pollokshaws.

Red belt Kevin Mason had a fantastic championship. In a very competitive free sparring contest, he produced an exceptional performance to collect gold.

It was an electrifying final, with both competitors fighting hard for first place, Kevin's experience and skill finally winning him that gold medal.

He also collected a silver medal in the power test section for back kick.

Club instructor William Waters was part of a highly professional and impressive black belt demonstration team.

The atmosphere was electric as the audience were treated to an exciting and exhilarating display of flexibility, jumping techniques, destruction with wood and bricks, sparring forms and free sparring, which is all about skill and good strategies.

It was a joy to watch and brought the house down.

William commented: “It was a fantastic performance by both Kevin and Fraser, with both students showing great determination and skill.

“I was very proud of the effort and commitment they put in on the day.

“I know both Kevin and Fraser trained extremely hard over the past few months for this competition.”

Kevin, who is red belt 1st ji, will be sitting his black belt grading later this month.

William Waters said: “I wish him every success for his grading. It will be fantastic to have a third student achieve Black Belt status for the club.”

Tukido is a very good way to keep fit and no matter what age, you are never too old to train.
