Dean Caldwell regains British Welterweight title

Dean Caldwell

TOTAL Combat veteran Dean Caldwell won the British welterweight title for the second time earlier this month after an impressive victory over rising star Colin Fletcher.

Caldwell, who is part of Wishaw Mixed Martial Arts club, Team Mataleon, first held the title in 2007 after winning a four-man tournament.

He jumped at the chance to regain the belt earlier this month on Total Combat 40 in Houghton le Spring.

The fight started with Fletcher charging Caldwell with a huge knee to the face, putting the Scot down against the cage. Fletcher then began an onslaught of strikes in an attempt to finish the contest quickly.

However Caldwell kept his composure and began to force the English fighter on to his back with a single leg takedown as Fletcher continued to attack with a D’Arce choke.

Caldwell stifled his attempts, escaping the choke and gaining the momentum with some punishing blows.

Fletcher threw a kick which was caught by Caldwell, who forced him back to the ground for the remainder of the round, punishing him further with a number of strikes.

Fletcher then tried to throw a kick which was intercepted.

Again the younger opponent was to regret the move as Caldwell picked him up and slammed him to the floor.

Fletcher attempted another choke in desperation only to find himself back on the floor, with Caldwell in the dominant position. This time there was no comeback and after a series of quality blows Fletcher rolled over and tapped the floor in submission.

Caldwell is now undefeated in his four career fights.

He would like to thank everyone at Team Mataleon, including assistant coach Stuart Armstrong, for all their support at the event. He also thanks the YMCA for continued support and sports therapist Joe Mitchell keeping him injury-free.
